CSDA Seminar:How are social grant beneficiaries using grants to generate income?

Séminaire  2019-07-30 2:00 après-midi    2019-07-30 4:00 après-midi

The Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) and the South African Research
Chair in Social Welfare and Development at the University of Johannesburg invite you
to the seminar titled:

How are social grant beneficiaries using grants to generate income?

South Africa has an extensive social assistance programme reaching almost 40% of
the population, with positive impacts on poverty levels and several human development
outcomes. Despite the positive benefits of social protection in South Africa, these
transfers are often insufficient to cover the basic needs of beneficiaries.

The seminar presents the findings of a qualitative study conducted in Soweto among a
diverse urban group of grant beneficiaries. The study found that complex and nuanced
livelihood strategies, i.e. income generation activities, were being used to ’increase’
their grants. Despite participants’ exercise of agency, the study also documented the
challenges and constraints that limited their livelihood outcomes, such as access to
credit, security, high levels of poverty in the community, and unemployment. These will
also be unpacked during the seminar.
