…a new individual! Harriet Mawia joined the Africa Evidence Network (AEN) to be part of a vibrant community committed to advancing evidence-based policymaking for sustainable development in Africa. As a Socio-Economist specialising in agricultural and food systems socioeconomics, Harriet has witnessed the transformative potential of research and data in influencing policy and improving livelihoods. Her work focuses on integrating gender perspectives into agricultural and food policy through applied econometric analysis, with the goal of ensuring that development interventions are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to local realities.
The AEN provides a unique platform for collaboration with researchers, policymakers, and practitioners who share a common vision of using evidence to inform transformative change. Harriet is particularly drawn to the Network’s emphasis on bridging the gap between research and practice, ensuring that data and empirical findings translate into tangible policy actions that drive growth and resilience.
Her motivation is rooted in a deep passion for gender equality and the empowerment of young women in the agricultural sector. Across Africa, women continue to face barriers to accessing resources, technologies, and decision-making spaces. Through the AEN, Harriet hopes to contribute rigorous research and gender-responsive analysis that inform interventions aimed at addressing these inequalities and promoting inclusive economic development.
Joining the AEN also provides an opportunity to enhance her own analytical, policy engagement, and communication skills through collaboration and shared learning. Ultimately, Harriet aims to utilise this platform to generate and disseminate credible evidence that supports transformative agricultural and food system policies, thereby advancing food security, economic empowerment, and improved livelihoods across Africa.
